ADYTA will participate in the development of the Portuguese quantum communications infrastructure PTQCI

28 July 2022

PTQCI is the Portuguese infrastructure for EuroQCI, the EU’s future secure quantum communication network

PTQCI, the 1st segment of the European quantum communications network in Portugal, was awarded by the European Commission to the consortium integrated by Adyta on 15 July 2022, within the scope of the first call for the Digital European Program.

The project is the national contribution to the European Quantum Communication Infrastructure (EuroQCI), the future common quantum communication infrastructure across Europe. PTQCI will implement the first ultra-secure quantum communication infrastructure at a national level through terrestrial connections. It also intends to prepare the spatial connection using quantum cryptography technologies such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD).

The development of the infrastructure is under the coordination of the National Security Office – GNS – in synergy with Deimos Engenharia. The consortium is composed of the most relevant Portuguese public and private organizations in Telecommunications and Security technologies in Portugal: National Security Office (GNS), Deimos Engenharia (DME), IP TELECOM, AlticeLabs (ALB), Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), Institute of Systems and Computer Engineering – Research and Development – INESC-ID, Adyta (A), Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT), Warpcom (W), Omnidea (O), Instituto Superior de Engenharia de Lisboa (ISEL), Instituto Português da Qualidade (IPQ) and Instituto Português Quantum (PQI).

PTQCI is based on DISCRETION, a project in which Adyta also participates, which aims to develop Quantum Communications for Defense. DISCRETION is implementing a resilient network in the existing fiber optic infrastructures in Portugal, connecting different public entities in the Lisbon metropolitan area, and a test network involving academic and private actors. One of the QKD nodes that will be developed in DISCRETION will also be deployed in the PTQCI network.

Carlos Carvalho, CEO of Adyta, states, “It is with great satisfaction and honor that we participate in yet another project recognized at the European level that will allow the construction of such a relevant and innovative infrastructure. Being, once again, part of a project of this nature, which began with our participation in DISCRETION, is the result of the fantastic work of the Adyta team and the incredible focus we place on developing innovative solutions. We are building the future of telecommunications, which motivates us a lot. ‘

PCQTI will run from 2023 to 2026 for 30 months.
